On Christmas Eve the family service was held at 4:00 pm. Rowena and Rev. Anne alternated with reading the scripture and expanding on its meaning. The children were called up to hear the story and place the figures in the creche. The baby Jesus figure was retrieved from its hiding place among the parishioners, a tradition at CHI, and placed in the manger. The carol singing was glorious and once again, the church was packed.
The “Greening of the Church” was held the Sunday before Christmas and all hands pitched in following Jutta’s instructions. The tree was decorated, poinsettias graced the altar, the pew standards were erected with candle holders atop, the window sills were adorned, the creche was carried up front, lights and greens were spread amply around the church and the wreaths were placed on the doors. The church was transformed.
Rev. Anne donated Advent candles and rings for parishioners and instructed us all how and when to light the candles. We also made and sold table decorations for the second year as a small fundraiser in place of the Christmas bazaar.
On December 6 we hosted the Caldwell University Choir under the direction of Professor Laura Greenwald and with Warren Helms as the accompanist. The young men and women sang Vivaldi’s Gloria as well as a selection of Christmas carols. With the lights dimmed and the church filled, it was a perfect start to the Christmas season. A gala celebration was held afterwards with plenty of hot and cold hors d’oeuvres and good wine. It is hoped that this will mark the first of a series of concerts so that Holy Innocents may share its musical gifts with the community.
